Episode 071: End of the Year Reflection
===

Joanna Newton: [00:00:00] Everything we handle and learn how to handle grows our character and then makes us be able to handle the next thing even better and help people more and just be a better contribution to society. So thinking about character growth as well as your accomplishments I think is really important in this phase and I think it's just really easy to pinpoint those like concrete.

Accomplishments more than our internal growth, and that's why I think it's important as you're reflecting on that growth, if you're focusing on some of those more like monetary tangible things to actually. Reflect a little bit deeper for yourself and for who you are.

Joanna Newton: Welcome to the her first podcast, where we help online business owners, coaches, and creators build the confidence to thrive in their businesses while maintaining a sustainable work life balance. This is your space to prioritize yourself in [00:01:00] both life and work.

Michelle Pualani: Today, we're diving into a reflective and transformative process to help you close out the year with clarity and step into the new year with purpose. Think of this as your roadmap for reviewing the past year. we're doing part one. So reflecting on 2024. And in the next episode, you'll get part two, which is all about goal setting for the year ahead. Why do we reflect at the end of the year? It really gives us a sense of accomplishment. It gives us a sense of checking in. It allows us to take stock and inventory of perhaps what we set out to do at the beginning of the year. What maybe went. those things that maybe w to just give ourselves a So often we're focused on task, the to do list, wha us, what are we workin gotten there yet and we d step back to review, to celebrate everything that this point, [00:02:00] even if it di a certain milestone or go for yourself.

What was th established along the way steps? What were the tiny acknowledge or maybe reco But now that you look bac Wow. I've come a long way. I've done a lot and I feel good about everything that I've been able to just be in up until this point. So it gives you a chance to invest in yourself. It gives you a chance to celebrate, be grateful for, and. of lean into your own appreciation, your own self belief, self respect, and self trust. Because the more you can kind of, my coach calls it stacking evidence, the more you can stack evidence of what you've been able to do up until this point, the more successful you will be moving forward as you build that inner trust, that inner knowing. so today is all about that reflection and being able to give yourself the time and space to celebrate, to acknowledge, and to be present with everything that took [00:03:00] place over the course of this past year.

Joanna Newton: One of the things that people talk about when it comes to reflection and goal setting is this idea of you can reflect and set goals at any time. You don't have to wait till the new year. And while that is totally true, I think it's really wise, especially as like, business owners who set their own schedule, set their own lives to not be constantly resetting and re goal setting because it can make you actually get distracted and not focus.

So taking specific times throughout the year, whether that's quarterly or monthly or a different points to say, I'm going to set my plans at my strategy. Go for it, let it play out, and then reassess, I think business owners can easily get distracted and like chase whatever idea is that they have that day instead of really seeing a strategy through, then making changes, assessing, and moving on.

So setting times throughout the year is a great way to really focus on goal setting, planning, reflection, so you [00:04:00] can. You can track what's going on, and it's easy to think about that in quarters end of year because there's natural times. Everybody's resetting and you can have that. So when you're setting time aside, it's important to actually block out that time in advance.

I am a. notorious for overbooking myself and over scheduling. And if I don't actually put the time on my calendar and plan for it, I will let other things get in the way. So making sure you're blocking out that time is really important. also get yourself in a nice calm environment. If you're going to sit down and reflect, you want to be free from distractions.

put your phone away, put your computer away, turn on, do not disturb. If you're using your Computer to write notes, put on soft music, get yourself in an environment where you can really, really reflect if you're someone who can't. Sit down and reflect. If the house is a mess, then clean the room you're in.

Get yourself in a [00:05:00] good environment and space to be able to properly reflect on what you've accomplished and what you've done. You also want to be prepared to be honest and genuine. This is for you, for your reflection. This isn't just Where you have to make the things and the mistakes you've made sound good for other people.

You can just really truly reflect on the good, the bad, all of the things that you've gone through to have that reflection for you. And most importantly, enjoy it. revel in the memories that you've had, the milestones you've made, and just enjoy the process of thinking through that everything that you've done in the year.

Michelle Pualani: One of the reasons that we reflect before we move forward is to really get a good scope and picture of where we are. When I was coaching specifically in healthy habit formation, fitness, health, It was impossible to make change if you didn't actually first know what you needed to change. And I know that sounds simple but it's amazing how many people set a goal and then never obtain [00:06:00] it because they don't understand what their current circumstances are. They just look forward and say, oh, I'm going to hit this income milestone, but I'm not going to be able to figure out how to get there because I don't know what I'm doing right now. I'm going to hit this weight goal, but I don't know what my food is like and my fitness is like at this moment. So it takes reflecting on what has been and what is current in order to then move on to the next step of goal setting.

So this is such an important thing to do before you look forward to the year ahead. And one of the ways in order to look back is to create a timeline. There have been really great templates that I've used in programs like notion, something like a simple blank document, whether you want to do it by hand or on the computer is totally up to you.

The format is your choice, but take some time to create a timeline of how the year progressed for you month by month. quarter by quarter starting in January 2024. Look back. Some of the ways that it can be helpful to do that is looking back [00:07:00] at like physical, tangible things that tracks that, whether that's your Google calendar, whether that's your social media account, because you were sharing certain stories or certain posts along certain times, Whether that is your camera roll and you can look back based on the actual date to see, Oh yeah, I made a trip to Hawaii in February. Oh yeah, we had this event that was amazing for Sober Curious Sunday. It just kind of gives you an awareness. Lights up the memory of what this year held for you and then track that lay it out.

What happened? what were the actual milestones? What were the small things again that you thought in the moment not that big of a deal? But now that you look back on it, it was really pretty Powerful and huge for you. What are the personal things? What are the family things? What are the success and business things that you worked on?

What are the health and fitness things that you accomplished? What are those little things that came up along your life that you want to acknowledge, identify, and track over the course of your. [00:08:00] timeline, and it doesn't always have to be positive things. It can be challenging things and difficult things and mistakes that you made. Just things that felt pivotal in your life that were impressed upon you and that can help you acknowledge, identify, reflect on what happened this year and what made you the person that you are today.

Joanna Newton: One of the things that I experienced recently, which is super weird, is a picture came up on my husband's like Google photos. You know how sometimes they'll give you those memories of like, here's a photo. Actually, this has been happening a lot lately. both of us get those memories of this is from seven years ago, or this is from eight years ago.

And I personally have changed And I've seen an insane amount in the past two years, the two years who I was two years ago and who I am today, like are honestly not the same person. And so coming across these photos has been really experiential for me because it reminds me of the mindset changes I've had, the things that I've gone through, even [00:09:00] my financial state, one of them was a Christmas tree picture from my daughter's first Christmas.

And I saw the presents under the tree. And I remember that Christmas and I remember how stressed I was about getting enough presents for her for Christmas. Me and my husband decided to like not get each other anything for Christmas. So she would have presents for her first Christmas. And like, there were like seven presents.

And I remember being really stressed about buying those seven, like, about finding the money for those seven presents. And like, that's just not where I am today. And that was a really good feeling. Not that everything's about materialistic things, but just that seven years ago, I was like stressing about, you know, getting my daughter a few presents for Christmas.

And And now I'm just not in that state anymore, um, which is a really cool way to reflect. I love that you brought up looking through Google calendars and you can even use photos and things to just remind you of the progress, that you've made throughout the year. So I think [00:10:00] now I'm going to dig into and share some of my milestones from this year of looking back on, on 2025.

And for me, this year. Intentionally was not about super hard, crazy goal setting. I had two main goals for my year, um, which was to work on my, like my general personal brand presence and also to focus on my health, which are things that I've never really focused on before in a calendar year, I'm normally just worrying about making enough money.

You know, getting to the next level in my career or my business or what that thing is. And those two things were really important for me to focus on. So if you've been listening to the podcast for a while, I've shared a lot about some of my, my health struggles. I have an autoimmune disease. 2024 was a very, very hard year for me.

I needed to get blood work every single week. I was seeing specialists once or twice a month to try to figure out what was going on with me. Now, unfortunately, in that whole saga, I never really [00:11:00] got to root cause of my autoimmune condition. I mean, they just believe it was like genetically triggered and it's something I have and, and I deal with, but towards the end of 2024, it's, it is, it's 2024 now.

And I'm messing up the year, um, towards the end of 2023, I. I was really disheartened and just thought I was never going to feel better. I thought I was going to feel sick and lethargic and tired and have joint pain forever was where I was at. And I really made a lot of changes in this year to my diet and my exercise and my sleep and my water intake and all of those things.

to just really focus on my health and that made a huge difference in the symptoms I was feeling. so I still have my autoimmune condition. I'm on medication for it and that helps, but adding in a bunch of lifestyle changes and sticking to them. Greatly improved my health and I've had a fantastic year.

the year [00:12:00] before I ended up going on a vacation once and I had so much joint pain that I was in the hotel at night in tears because everything was swollen. we did the same vacation in 2024. I could walk around. I had no issues, no joint pain, and it was a night and day difference. So I'm really proud that I, took that.

in my life and actually put something for myself first and my health first over either someone else's needs or my business's needs or my career. My other big milestone for me was in establishment of my personal brand. Now that was one of my goals, for this year, but it didn't like turn out the way I expected.

Really wanted to grow on social media and grow a personal brand that way, and, create this brand presence and, you know, influencer status is like what I pictured in my head. But one of the cool things that happened for me this year is I was able to build [00:13:00] up a profile Kajabi Experts Marketplace store.

I help people create online courses. I use a software called Kajabi and Kajabi towards the end of last year created like a marketplace where people could find people. I was able to build up my personal profile there where I have people booking calls with me every single day without me having to work.

I have a name in this space. And even though it's not a big TikTok following or big Big LinkedIn following. I have a brand presence that's to do with my name, my face, and that's just really exciting to me. Another big milestone this year, this was a business milestone. Very exciting. Millennial Marketer hit a million dollars in total business sales in October, which is super exciting.

you know, it was one of those things, of course, as a business owner, you always want to say we made a million dollars. And I'm just really proud of us for having consistency and growth and just working hard towards that goal. [00:14:00] So that's really exciting. and then another big. Milestone for me as a business owner has been being in a position where I've had to make some really hard business decisions.

when it comes to how we spend money, how we hire, who we choose to partner with and what we had to do. This was a great year for us because we saw that million dollar milestone, but it was also a hard year for us. We're in like a hard scaling stage. We're trying to figure out what to do to get to the next level.

And that came with having to make some hard decisions, which I haven't had to do before. And I'm very proud of myself for how I handled them, how I made those decisions and how I moved on from them.

Michelle Pualani: Congratulations. You're absolutely amazing. I'm so grateful to hear about how your health has gotten to a much better place because we don't realize how much that affects our everyday lives, how it's impacting our business, how we're showing up on calls, the way we're creating content, like you're. Physical, [00:15:00] mental, emotional health really does have such a huge impact in our businesses in such a big way when we are personal brands, coaches, digital creators, and congratulations on hitting the seven figure mark. It's so amazing. It's so funny because, I always hear my coaches talk about like, okay, the next level, the next devil type, of perception is that there are always new challenges.

There are always new challenges. different difficulties and there are next stages. And when you get to a level of income and delivery on services at that level, that there are going to be new opportunities for growth and you are going to have to navigate different things, but you can take it with stride and handle that as you go.

So, I'll review my milestones for the year and you can kind of think for yourself as you're listening. Again, pull out those things from your year that you were either celebrating or recognizing as a growth point or opportunity or challenging thing that you overcame and giving yourself credit for getting through that. So this was our first year in business of TBH. We didn't do a ton in sales, but [00:16:00] it was really a beta test year for us. And we got incredible traction in the bars and restaurants that we've gone into as well as direct to consumer. We've had a ton of excellent reviews, no refund requests. have a great customer return rate.

We just like are showing really positive numbers. And as we're doing our funding right now for about 150, 000 in friends and family, we already have interested people and we're starting to invest in the channels of sales and marketing growth. That's going to help us scale in 2025. So this year was a really beautiful year to build the brand, to create the identity, to really, um, Understand our customers, figure out who we're speaking to and how we're speaking to them. It's such an important part of business that I really took for granted when I was first getting started is like, who are you here to serve? And sometimes that just takes testing, experimentation, and putting yourself out there. True conversations, whether that's in person or digitally to understand what people are wanting, what they're already looking for, and then being able to meet them where they're at and provide that need [00:17:00] that product, that service. that was huge for us. I'm so excited to keep you updated on what 2025 has in store. We're moving into a new manufacturing facility. That's going to give us higher capacity and easier access. So it's just, it's all positive things in that realm. We're doing, we're doing excellent. Jeremy and I took a three week trip to the UK, which is something I've wanted to do for a really long time. And so he really made that possible. Uh, it was such a beautiful way to just get away to have our own time together.

Which took place right after we had to put our dogs down. So navigating that experience with our dogs coming down sick and then having to put them down after, you know, 12, 14 years of their life was one of the most challenging things I've ever had to do. Just acknowledging the amount of grief that's a part of that experience, and knowing that, of course, it's not a milestone, it's not a goal, it's not something you set out to at the beginning of the year, but still [00:18:00] acknowledging and identifying that it's something that you went through, something that you overcame, and that was a part of your experience.

So, as you're reflecting on your own experience, over the course of 2024 and of this past year is knowing that the challenges, the difficulties that you go through are all a part of your story, and it isn't a good or bad situation, and you can find strength that you built through that experience, you can find the opportunity with which you were able to move through that experience.

So as you're reflecting on your own year, again, there are going to be more challenging things and it's okay to identify them and it's, and put them on your timeline and celebrate yourself for navigating that. that time, I also set a huge family boundary with someone that I considered rather toxic in my life.

And since that experience has just kind of like put up a wall, it's been such a huge weight off of my shoulders. And it's really enabled me to step into other [00:19:00] roles in my life in a much more present and active way. It was a huge release and shedding and letting go of expectation of pressure of having to mentally and emotionally always be concerned about this person and how they would respond to a certain situation.

So that for me was a really, really big pivotal moment. It also really enabled me to step into this space of Owning my life and owning my choices and owning my decisions and way of being and getting to establish what it is that I want when you're reflecting on this year. And as you head into next year with goal setting, part of that is really figuring out what do you want?

What do you want your business to look like? What do you want your life to look like? What do you want your relationships to look like? And sometimes we have so much pressure externally from our family, from our friends, from society, from the way that we grew up, that we're still holding onto, that is guiding our goals, that is guiding our wants, that is guiding our desires. being able [00:20:00] to let go of those pretenses and allow yourself to really tune inward and figure out what is it that you truly want is a big part of this exercise. Letting go of some of that external chatter and noise. And so for us, this was a really successful year in business. I did the enthused pitch competition, which I've talked about before on the podcast, but being chosen as one of five finalists out of 325 applicants and being flown to New York to do that pitch was a huge milestone for me.

And again, just a little bit of acknowledgement in stacking the evidence of what I'm able to accomplish and what I'm able to do https: otter. ai Some really exciting and successful, but all a part of my experience and all a part of this past year that has been a huge year of growth with everything that we've been through. And I'm so grateful.

Joanna Newton: Thank you for sharing and thank you for sharing some of the hard things and the good things. I think it can be really easy when you're thinking about [00:21:00] reflection to think about monetary growth and promotions and achievements and accomplishments, but the things that we go through make us who we are. And you know, I was talking to someone the other day and we were talking about like if you just.

All of a sudden had like 2 million, right? You wouldn't necessarily know how to do with it. Anything with it immediately, when you know how to handle 100, 000, then you can handle 250, 000. You can like grow to being able to handle that much money with grace. I think the same goes with as money as it goes with.

personal experience and responsibility. Everything we handle and learn how to handle grows our character and then makes us be able to handle the next thing even better and help people more and just be a better contribution to society. So thinking about character growth as well as your accomplishments I think is really important in this phase and I think it's just really easy to pinpoint those [00:22:00] like concrete.

Accomplishments more than our internal growth, and that's why I think it's important as you're reflecting on that growth, if you're focusing on some of those more like monetary tangible things to actually. Reflect a little bit deeper for yourself and for who you are.

Think about like what you're most proud of. Um, and Michelle said something earlier that really stuck out to me, like out the notion of what does my family want? What does my family think is important? What do my friends think is important? What does the world think is most important? What are you personally most proud of for yourself?

what skills or habits did you develop? How did those change? You know, I was talking about like my health journey. I've developed much better health habits when it comes to how I eat and take care of myself. That's huge. And that's life changing, especially I think things get harder as you get older and me being able to establish some of [00:23:00] those habits in my late thirties are going to make going into my forties a lot easier if I can have those things now.

thinking about what obstacles you overcame, what are those things that were just really hard, but you lived through them. We talked, on a podcast episode about Ariana Grande of the things she's overcome and how she overcame them. Always got through it. What are the hard things that you went through that you got through and you got to the other side?

Thinking about that can make it so the next hard thing you go through can be just maybe a little bit, a little bit easy for you. And how have you changed? What's different about you? What, what are those areas of growth and how are you different than who you were at the beginning of the year?

Michelle Pualani: All of those things and asking yourself those questions is part of the goals. It's part of the accomplishment. You know, we talk a lot about the goal setting piece in your business as you're looking at your year and quarter one, quarter two, et cetera. We're always kind of setting those ideal [00:24:00] numbers and metrics that we're hoping to accomplish, but you have to have systems in order to get there.

You have to have habits in place. And so if you can reflect on the habits that you the systems, the efficiencies, the abilities that you've cultivated through the past year, that will help get you closer to accomplishing the goal in the first place. so as you're thinking about ways you can start to shift and improve or grow into the next year, if you're looking to kind of Up level or get to that next layer of what you're able to accomplish, you can think back on what didn't I achieve and why was that the case? You know, trying to look at this from a lens of neutrality is so important. There's so much judgment and shame and guilt that is often tied into not accomplishing a goal. And so often in my business groups and masterminds and people that I watch in this. space. They just get so hard on themselves about what they weren't able to accomplish. I set out this year to make 100, 000 and I didn't even get close to that goal or I wanted to reach 10, 000 followers and I [00:25:00] didn't accomplish that. And then you start to turn inward and you have this negative narrative that starts to kind of. solidify or reiterates the things that you've thought about yourself. You're not enough. Maybe it's the way that you look, you, you know, all of these things that you're internalizing when really it could be tactical.

It could be the system that you employed. It could be the way that you approach the process. It could be that you weren't as consistent as you thought that you were. It could be that you weren't doing the research for the SEO driven titles in the beginning. Like there are a lot of different pieces that you can look at it.

from the lens of a business owner, from the lens of a marketer with neutrality, as opposed to judging yourself and thinking that you're just not cut out for this or that you were never meant to do this. Or why are you the one who is going to be successful? Like instead of asking those questions, just think about like, what was it about my process or habits or work systems that That didn't allow me to accomplish that goal in the first place. Ask yourself, what [00:26:00] do I regret? And not in the lens of like, Oh, I'm going to regret and hold on to this forever with attachment. Um, but what are things that I would look back and say, oh, I think I would have maybe done that differently. How can you pull out lessons from those experiences? Again, not from a, that was a good or bad situation or that was a good or bad decision. Really in your business, there really aren't good or bad decisions. They all just lead you down different paths. You might've closed the door on one opportunity, but it opened up five more here. You might've missed out on this one thing, but. It led you to something else that was completely different or a huge pivot, but it made sense for your path. So it's not a good or bad. It's not a regret in the sense that I'm going to hold on to this and let it wither me away for the rest of my life. But if I'm looking back and I would have done something different, what was it about the decision making process that I could have changed? Was it because I was not listening to my intuition at that time?

Was it because I was paying attention to what five different people were? telling me opposed to knowing [00:27:00] and being in tune with what my best decision would be for my choice. what are those things that held me back? Were there habits that I had in place? Were there belief systems that I'm holding on to?

Were there thought processes? Were there? Is there language that I'm using that's keeping me from getting to that next level, that's keeping me from taking the action, that's keeping me from asking for the opportunity, the sale, the collaboration? What are those things that are kind of been holding you back?

Identify and acknowledge them. Write them out. There's so much, uh, shame tied to those things that we do not bring to the light. Oftentimes, there's shame around those things that we hide or we don't let surface. And sometimes when we can just shed light on them, it allows us to put them out there and say, Oh, it's actually not as big of a deal as I thought. You lose some of the emotion when you're able to get it out into the world, writing it, speaking it, or identifying and acknowledging that thing. So using those tactics, using these questions and being able to reflect on the way in [00:28:00] which this year has played out for you from a neutral perspective and lens.

Joanna Newton: Another good area to reflect on as you're going through everything that happened this year is to think about your relationships. So think about the people you work with, your family, your partner or spouse, your friends, the people you're with every day affect your every day. And you want to kind of think about who you're spending your time with and how that affects you.

Right? This is part of the reflection, um, because it's an important part of our lives.

Michelle Pualani: in my world of personal development, it's cliche at this point, but you really are the makeup of the five people you spend the most time with. And that is in health, wealth, and happiness. And those people are either going to inhibit you or they're going to encourage you.

And you want to surround yourself with people who are going to move you forward, who challenge you, who don't let you feed into the victim mentality, who allow you to See opportunities instead of setbacks [00:29:00] and the friends that you have, the people that you choose to be in your business, your partner and everything that Joanna listed, like all of those relationships are such an important part of your own personal growth, but also your business success.

As you head into the future, finding yourself in the rooms with people who are working towards the same goals will completely change your life, will completely change the actions that you take. And the beliefs that you have about yourself, which enables you to reach toward those bigger goals. So asking yourself these three questions, who had a positive impact and how did they over the course of the past year, who drained your energy and in what ways. And who left a meaningful impression? Sometimes those who are inspirational, those who you could consider a mentor, those who you don't spend very much time with, but could take advantage of in some way to schedule a coffee call or take a walk with, they're right there in your life and they're [00:30:00] accessible.

You might just not be identifying and acknowledging who those people are. So reflecting on those questions and giving yourself time and space to say, is this relationship fueling me? If not, is it something that I can either cut out of my life completely? Like I have done this year. Or, someone maybe I can transition away from a little bit, spend less time with.

So take that time, reassess your relationships, and then act accordingly.

Joanna Newton: The next step in the process as you're reflecting is to prepare yourself to set goals. Not set goals yet. I tend to like skip over all this stuff and go right to goals, so this is a whole good lesson for me. But, um, to really prepare yourself to move on to goal setting, which is what we'll talk about in our next episode.

You want to just evaluate those key areas of your life, like your work, your health, your money, your family, your spirituality, your mental health. Think about those [00:31:00] big bucket areas and just identify what's working and what's not. I think we get into these cycles, or at least I know I do, where I think that Just because I've been doing something one way for so long that I can't change it, but we can change our lives.

And as you're evaluating those areas, if something is just not adding value to your life, you can cut it out. You can change it. You can make adjustments and you have that ability. I know something me and my husband have been really talking about is just like how we simplify and you know, we don't do a ton of activities and we have friends, but we don't have tons of friends.

We stay in a lot on the weekends and aren't filling our schedules because we want that time to just relax. And that's very easy. Yeah. against especially like a family with a child, it's like very against what most people do. Most people are going from thing to thing to [00:32:00] thing to thing all weekend and then, you know, going throughout the week and we're just kind of sick of that like rat race running around to just get ready for the next day to do it all over again.

You can look at the areas of your life and think, what do I love? What's great? What's adding value? And what are the things that are just not working for me that I want to adjust?

Michelle Pualani: Again, if you want to make change in your life, you can't do that if you don't identify where you are first. So evaluating these questions. key areas allows you to take stock and inventory of what's happening right now. You know, you've done your reflection, you've got the past year, you have your timeline, you've identified and acknowledged these areas in your life in which you've either accomplished or grown or had success. And now it's your turn. Like what is happening today? What's happening is this last month of the year closes out. Where am I and how am I going to shift and change that moving forward? So in the next episode, we're going to use all of this work to really have clarity around what goals you're welcoming in, in the new [00:33:00] year, setting intentions around your wants, your desires, and those things that you're going to work to accomplish that truly align. your kind of internal compass with where you're headed in external actions. The really beautiful thing about this as we're starting to wrap up is that it's completely and utterly personal to you, which means that you cannot do it wrong.

There is no right. There is no wrong. There is no, you have to do this. You have to answer this question. This is just to give you a An opportunity to reflect on this past year to celebrate yourself to acknowledge and identify the milestones and to prepare for what is to come next. So your chance to really reflect, to grow, and to see yourself for all that you've done and really identify and acknowledge, like, how proud you can be of yourself.

Cause we're proud of you. We're very proud of you.
